Evaluates patients’ mental and physical health to determine the type and severity of mental, emotional and behavioural disorders
Reviews patients’ medical, psychiatric and psychological histories to inform diagnosis and care planning. Conducts physical examinations to assess general health and identify contributing factors
Orders and interprets laboratory tests, imaging, neuropsychological assessments and other diagnostic investigations. Analyses test results and clinical findings to select the most appropriate treatment strategies
Prescribes and administers medication, psychotherapy, rehabilitation programs and other therapeutic interventions
Coordinates hospital admissions and provides in-patient psychiatric care when required. Collaborates, consults and supervises other Medical Practitioners and Health Professionals in patient management
Determines the need for involuntary treatment in line with relevant mental health legislation. Provides expert input to courts and statutory bodies regarding patients in legal or forensic contexts
Teaches, supervises and evaluates medical students and registrars, including administering assessments of progress
